USS Oriskany/Morrison Springs Trip
27-29 July 2007
Pensacola, FL
Day 3
0700/Sunday, 29 July 2007: Up, showered and
filling out log books while having a cup of coffee. We checked out of the hotel
and went to MBT to pick up our tanks for the last time. Then we were on
the road back home with a stop by Morrison Spring to do a quick dive and rinse
our gear.
1030: We were at Morrison and and looking
around. As we were walking around, we met PerroneFord and Live4Sharks from
Scubaboard. We talked for a few minutes and then went to get geared up
ourselves. We went in the water at 1100. We were getting some looks since
Dee was wearing her "Shrek" hood and I was wearing the "Dragon" hood. But, we
got some good comments on them also. We went to the log, took some
pictures, went into the shallow cavern and took pics and a video. We
looked all around since 3 of us had never been there and the other (Bill) had
not been in 4 years. Mark called his dive after 18 minutes. He was
bored. Bill called his about 45 minutes into it. Dee and I kept
going until we ran out of air. We looked all around. I went back into the
shallow cavern and went to the "Cave" sign at the entrance of the deep cavern. I
didn't know the cavern and didn't have anyone with me that knew it, so I didn't
go into the deep one. I'll do it next time now that I know it's just a big
ballroom with one way in or out. Finally, Dee and I called the dive when
we started running low on air. We got 87 minutes from an AL80 tank on this
dive. Dee surfaced with 390psi and I had 380. No too shabby for me.
Especially since my weighting was all off. I struggled almost the entire dive
to correct buoyancy. I came close to calling it a couple times, but I stuck with
it. I was overweighted. Which seemed to be my calling for the weekend. I
need to work on my setup. I change wetsuits, tanks, hoods and everything
all the time. I need to stick with a setup and get the weighting on it correct.
Just something for me to practice on. This dive was 87 minutes, max depth
of 44 feet. Air temp was 92, surface temp was 70 and at depth, 68. Other
than weighting issues, the only other problem I had was the massive amount of
snot on my face when I took off my mask. I guess when I cleared my mask, I
cleared more than just my mask that time. :) Luckily, Dee is good dive
buddy and said, "You might want to wipe your face off there. And there.
And there. And there." We broke down the gear, rinsed off what sand we
could and were headed back on the road around 1300.
1900: Back home safe and sound after dropping
everyone off.
This was an awesome weekend!!! We had some good times and really enjoyed the company. This was a great group to dive with and I would do it again in heartbeat. Thanks to everyone that came!!!
